1. Engine Oil and Filter Replacement
The R1300GS uses a replaceable filter element located beneath a cover on the right side of the engine. The replacement interval is every 10,000 km or once a year.
Required materials and tools:
- ✅ Engine oil: approx. 5.0 l BMW Ultimate 5W-40
- ✅ Oil filter: Filter element for R1300GS
- ✅ Plug seal: Drain plug washer
- ✅ Oil container: Oil drain container
- ✅ Tools: Torx T30 (filter cover), Allen key/socket for the drain plug, torque wrench.
Procedure:
- Draining the oil: Place the motorcycle on its centre stand. Position an oil drain container under the engine. Unscrew the drain plug located on the underside of the engine and allow the oil to drain completely.
- Replacing the filter element: On the right side of the engine, locate the round oil filter cover. Using a Torx T30, unscrew the retaining bolts and remove the cover.
- Installing the filter: Remove the old element, clean the housing and insert the new filter. Refit the filter cover and tighten the bolts to 10 Nm.
- Refitting the drain plug: Clean the drain plug, fit a new seal and screw it back into the underside of the engine. Tighten to 30 Nm.
- Filling with oil: Unscrew the filler cap on the cylinder and pour in approximately 4 litres of new oil.
- Check: Start the engine briefly, allow the oil to circulate, switch it off and, once it has settled, check the level in the sight glass.

2. Air Filter Replacement
The BMW R 1300 GS is equipped with two air filters. To maintain performance and engine protection, BMW recommends replacement every 20,000 km, or sooner in dusty environments.
Required materials and tools:
- ✅ Filters (set of 2): Genuine BMW | K&N kit | DNA Stage 2
- ✅ Tools: Torx T25 and Torx T30.
Procedure:
- Removing the covers: To access the filters, the upper side tank covers on both sides must be removed. Use a Torx tool to loosen the plastic retaining bolts.
- Opening the airboxes: You will find the airbox covers under the side covers. Unscrew the airbox cover retaining bolts.
- Replacing the elements: Remove the old air filters. Clean the inside of the airbox of any dirt and insects (use a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth, not compressed air directed into the intake).
- Installation: Insert the new filter elements. Make sure that they sit precisely in the grooves and seal around the entire perimeter.
- Reassembly: Screw the airbox covers back on, then refit the tank side fairings.

3. Spark Plug Replacement
Spark plugs on the BMW R1300GS are normally replaced every 20,000 km. Correct spark plug operation is essential for smooth engine running and optimum fuel consumption.
Required materials and tools:
- ✅ Spark plugs (2 pcs): Genuine BMW | NGK LMAR8AI-10
- ✅ Special tools: Coil puller, Thin-wall 14 mm spark plug wrench
- ✅ Other: Torque wrench, Torx T25.
Procedure:
- Preparation: The engine must be cool. If crash bars are fitted, some types may need to be removed for better access to the cylinder covers.
- Removing the coil cover: Using a Torx T25, unscrew the plastic coil cover on the side of the cylinder.
- Removing the ignition coil: Disconnect the wiring connector from the coil. Fit the coil puller onto the coil head and pull it smoothly out of the spark plug well.
- Replacing the spark plug: Using a thin-wall 14 mm wrench, unscrew the old spark plug. Before installing the new spark plug, check that the well is free from dirt.
- Installation and torque: First screw in the new spark plug by hand to prevent damage to the thread in the cylinder head. Then tighten it with a torque wrench to 12 Nm.
- Completion: Insert the coil back in (you must hear/feel it “click” onto the plug), connect the connector and refit the plastic cover. Repeat the same procedure on the other cylinder.

4. Final Drive and Driveshaft Service
Regular maintenance includes changing the final drive oil and lubricating the driveshaft splines to prevent corrosion and excessive wear.
Required materials and lubricants:
- ✅ Final drive oil (180 ml): BMW Hypoid G3 75W-90 | Motorex 75W-140
- ✅ Seals (kit): Drain seal + Filler seal
- ✅ Spline lubricant: Optimol Paste TA
- ✅ Boot paste: Staburags NBU 30
- ✅ Equipment: Filling syringe, Torx T40, T45.
Procedure:
- Draining the oil: Unscrew the drain plug on the underside of the final drive and allow the oil to drain. Clean the magnetic tip of the plug.
- Releasing the driveshaft: Release the torque strut and pivot the final drive downward. This provides access to the shaft.
- Cleaning and lubricating the shaft: Wipe off the old lubricant and apply a thin layer of Optimol Paste TA to the splines.
- Treating the boot: Apply Staburags paste to the boot contact surfaces for perfect sealing against moisture.
- Reassembly and filling: Pivot the drive back up and secure the strut (56 Nm). Fit the drain plug with a new seal and tighten it (20 Nm). Using a syringe, pour exactly 180 ml of oil through the upper opening.
- Tightening: Also fit the filler plug with a new seal and tighten it to 20 Nm.

5. Brake Service: Pads and Fluid
The R1300GS brake system is fully integral with an advanced ABS unit. To maintain 100% functionality and safety, precise procedures and torque values must be observed.
Materials and professional equipment:
Premium pads: Genuine front | Genuine rear | Brembo Front | Brembo Rear | SBS Front | SBS Rear
DOT 4 fluid (1L): BMW DOT 4 | Castrol | Motorex
Cleaning and diagnostics: Motorex Brake Clean, GS-911 diagnostics, torque wrench.
Detailed procedure:
A. Brake pad replacement
- Removal and inspection: Loosen the caliper bolts (front T45). After removing the pads, check the condition of the discs (the wear limit is stamped on the disc).
- Piston cleaning: Extend the pistons by a few millimetres (not all the way!) and thoroughly clean them with brake cleaner. The pistons must be spotlessly clean before pushing them back in, so that dirt does not damage the internal seals and cause the brakes to bind.
- Reassembly: After pushing the pistons back, insert the new pads. Clean the caliper bolts and tighten them to 38 Nm.
B. Complete fluid replacement with GS-911 diagnostics
- Basic flush: Draw the old fluid out of the reservoir and top up with fresh DOT 4. Using the conventional method (through the bleed screw), flush the hoses until clean fluid flows out.
- ABS module activation: Connect the GS-911 and select "Bleed test" in the menu for blee
